Geoff Emerick in Memphis

Fry%20%26%20Emerick500.jpg

Studio owner and founder John Fry with Geoff Emerick.

Beatles engineer Geoff Emerick was in Memphis this week giving a presentation with his co-author Howard Massey at the Brooks Museum of Art in Overton Park. The presentation was hosted by our good friends at NARAS. From studio manager Jody Stephens:

Much of the Ardent staff, not to mention many Memphis Beatles fans, turned out to see Geoff Emerick this past Monday night. This Recording Academy presentation of “Here, There & Everywhere, My Life Recording the Beatles: An Interview With Geoff Emerick” included music journalist and author Howard Massey, Geoff's autobiography co-writer. It was an evening of stories that made us all feel like we were there in the moment with Geoff at the console and The Beatles were out on the floor of Abbey Road's Studio Two. His first session as engineer for them was recording "Tomorrow Never Knows." The beginning of many experiments that added imagination to the technical fundamentals of the recording process. John Fry and Geoff got to visit for about 45 minutes before the presentation, I will see if he has a story to tell. You can read the book for some of the stories Geoff and Howard told that evening.

Here's one that is not in the book......
My good friend Larry Nager (journalist/author) came up with a great question for Geoff that I asked the next night: There were many successful recording experiments during your sessions with The Beatles, can you tell us about one that failed? Without as much as a split-second pause, Geoff then said that John Lennon told him that he had gotten tired of having the mic in front of him, let's try having the mic in back of me. They tried it and it failed.

So all you beginning engineers out there don't have to try this one.

Geoff's book is available for purchase on Amazon.com.

BreakThru Radio Comes To The iPhone and iTouch

New York, NY - Indie-focused online music radio broadcaster, BreakThru Radio is using technology from TVersity to offer on-demand radio shows to iPhone and iTouch users. The news means the broadcaster’s diverse range of channels - covering the gamut, from reggae to rock.

Access is easy; iPhone and iTouch users simply need to navigate to iphone.breakthruradio.com in Safari on their device. Once there they will be presented with a series of drop-down menus which allow them to choose the on-demand show they want to hear.

Designed to break the dull stranglehold of commercial radio playlist culture in the US, BreakThru Radio is a channel collection that comprises interesting new sounds presented by DJs from the underground scene: death metal, dancehall, dubstep, hip-hop, indie rock, skronk, roots country, reggae, electronica, acid jazz, ambient beats, dub, two-step or folk, whatever … The site offers its daily listeners unlimited access to underground music, twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week.

In a world where independent music is becoming infinitely more accessible on the Internet, the need for informed sources to filter out the best of it has become a necessity. Unfortunately, this wealth of relevant music simply cannot be found on the graveyard known as commercial radio. Serious music aficionados are beyond sick and tired of feeling victimized by the expendable airwaves ejaculated by the old corporate radio structure. Their frustration, however, is at an end. “Music for music lovers,” is BTR’s motto, and one that its DJ’s take very seriously.

BTR offers its listeners unlimited access to underground music, twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, with a daily audience that includes more than two dozen countries. With its unique on-demand musical programming and focus on the best in new, independent music, it’s no surprise the site has well over 1,000,000 listeners daily, the majority of which are aged 13-24 years old.

BTR is constantly evolving, and 2007 saw the creation of a unique BTR Facebook application, making it possible for Facebook users to install a miniature version of BTR’s unique media player upon their personal pages. Also, independent video coverage was added to BTR, as well as top-notch editorial content and an intuitive global show calendar. Plus, BTR’s live musical content experienced immense growth, with exclusive recordings from Ardent Studios (Memphis, Tennessee), Old School Studios (Bury St Edmunds, United Kingdom) and Dubway Studios (New York City, New York) becoming part of BTR’s regular show schedule.

In fact, you could say that BTR has taken everything a music fan could ever need or want, and put it all into one cohesive website, completely free of charge to is users.

Unlike other radio stations, BTR offers complete on-demand programming; a first in Internet radio. Listeners can cater to their specific musical preferences, whatever the genre, and at the same time discover the best independent and unsigned artists from across the world.

BreakThru Radio (BTR) is the World’s Source for the Best Independent Music on the Internet, where expert DJs expose the rich underground of sound not found on commercial radio. Whether it’s death metal, dancehall, dubstep, hip-hop, indie rock, skronk, roots country, reggae, electronica, acid jazz, ambient beats, dub, two-step or folk, whatever genre you can imagine, BTR has it well-stocked, and with no expiration date. 954 Lexington Ave., Suite 199, New York, NY 10021 Copyright 2008 BreakThru Radio. Jody Stephens Answers Questions about Ardent's new record label

MF: What is your title as it pertains to the "mainstream" Ardent Music label?
JS: A&R rep

MF: How do you think people (both the public and music critics) will judge what you put out on Ardent Music in the future against both the rich history of Ardent's past and Ardent Records' more recent success in the Christian music world?
JS: Music critics see things and make observations based on many different angles...the music itself, players history, label history...to add depth to a story. I think the average listener hears a song and it either connects or it doesn't. For me, there can be a pretty impressive history and story associated with a piece of music but the bottom line is ...does the song make some emotional connection? Not too different from how we respond to food..are we crazy about it and can't get enough of it, is it pretty good, ok? Or don't think I'll try that again. All the peripheral stuff doesn't really matter.

MF: As far as signing other artists in the future is concerned- are you looking locally, regionally, and/or nationally? Is there any other artist that you're looking at that you could tell me about?
JS: The band/artist personalities and music connecting with those here at the label are the primary factors in our deciding to work with a band. The economics of a long distance relationship will play a role as well.

MF: What does the future hold for Ardent (this could include any label or studio projects)?
JS: With regard to the studio, Jason Latshaw is currently working with an incredible 3 piece rock band called Super 400. They are all great players that benefit from a "traditional" studio like Ardent as the space allows them to set up as a band, have eye contact and inspire each other as they play. John Hampton is just beginning a mix project with Chikuzen, a pretty cool Japanese pop R&B artist. As music taste turn back toward "performance driven" players I think studios like Ardent will benefit.

As for the label, finding the right artist that both connects with us, makes economic sense, and most of all, connects with enough people (sales) so that we all can continue doing this is challenging. We will see how our taste line up with the general public's.
